Early Life and Education

Mir-Ali Kashkaywas born on January 7, 1907, in Elizavetpol (present-day Ganja), Azerbaijan, into a prominent family. Despite enduring hardship during his childhood, including the tragic loss of his mother and uncle, Kashkay demonstrated a deep passion for education. In 1924, he enrolled in the Geological and Surveying Department of the Azerbaijan State Polytechnic Institute.

Academic Career and Contributions

Geology and Mineralogy:Kashkay obtained a degree in geology and became a prominent figure in the field. He authored numerous scientific publications on the petrology and mineralogy of Azerbaijan. As a key figure in the establishment of the Azerbaijani scientific school in geological and mineralogical sciences, he led the Department of Geochemistry and Mineralogy of Ore Deposits at the Institute of Geology at the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR.

Expedition and Discoveries:Throughout his career, Kashkay embarked on expeditions across Azerbaijan, the Caucasus region, and Siberia, making significant discoveries and advancing knowledge in geology and mineralogy. He discovered and characterized six new chromite deposits in the Lesser Caucasus mountains, as well as deposits of sulfur pyrite and iron oxide.

Leadership and Achievements

Academic Leadership:Kashkay became an Honorary Member of the Mineralogical Society and Chairman of its Azerbaijani branch. He also served as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR.

Geological Mapping:During his tenure in Moscow, Kashkay collaborated on the creation of geological and geochemical maps of vast areas of the Altai, Western Siberia, and the North Caucasus.

Publications:Kashkay authored several books, including "Terminology of Geology" (1936), a collaborative work with colleagues. His scientific articles appeared in prestigious journals.

Later Years and Legacy

Return to Azerbaijan:In 1936, Kashkay returned to Azerbaijan, where he held positions as a Senior Researcher at AzFAN and a University Lecturer. He continued his research and teaching until his passing in 1977.

Posthumous Recognition:Kashkay's legacy lives on. He is buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku, and his contributions to geology and mineralogy continue to inspire and inform researchers in the field.
