Nikolai Kassin: A Leading Soviet Geologist

Early Life and Education

Nikolai Kassin was born on December 14, 1885, in the village of Gnusino in the present-day Kirov Oblast. In 1904, he enrolled in the St. Petersburg Mining Institute.

Involvement in the Revolution

Kassin's involvement in the 1907 revolution led to his arrest and expulsion from St. Petersburg. He eventually graduated from the Mining Institute in 1913.

Hydrological and Geological Studies

From 1912 to 1916, Kassin conducted hydrogeological research in North-Eastern Kazakhstan and the Guryev region. From 1918 to 1924, he focused on geological studies of the Vyatka Governorate.

Academic Career

In 1917, Kassin joined the Geological Committee. He also taught at the Leningrad Mining Institute and Leningrad Institute of Railway Transport from 1918 to 1926.

Contribution to Kazakh Geology

In 1941, Kassin moved to Kazakhstan, becoming a consultant and senior researcher at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. He was elected a full member of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences in 1946.

Death and Legacy

Nikolai Kassin died on October 28, 1949, in Alma-Ata, present-day Kazakhstan. His contributions to the field of geology earned him numerous awards, including the Stalin Prize (1946) and the N.M. Przhevalsky Gold Medal (1930).
