Early Life and Career

Miroslava Němcová was born on November 17, 1952, in Nové Město na Moravě, Czechoslovakia. From 1968 to 1972, she attended an agricultural technical school in Havlíčkův Brod. Subsequently, she worked as a special referent at the Czech Statistical Office from 1972 to 1992. Following this, she ran a bookstore in Žďár nad Sázavou from 1992 to 2007.

Entry into Politics

Němcová entered politics in 1992 by joining the Civic Democratic Party (ODS). She became an ardent supporter of Václav Klaus's political line, earning her the animosity of Mirek Topolánek. In 1994, she was elected to the Žďár nad Sázavou municipal council as an ODS candidate.

Parliamentary Career

In 1998, Němcová was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic as an ODS candidate. During her first term, she served on the Committee on Social Policy and Healthcare, as well as the Budget Committee. She also held vice-chairmanship of the standing commission on media.

In 2002, Němcová was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. She became the Vice-Chairwoman of the Chamber and was elected as one of three deputy chairmen of the ODS party. In 2006, she was re-elected and became the First Vice-Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies.

Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies

Following the resignation of Miloslav Vlček in 2010, Němcová became the interim Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies. Later that year, she was elected as Chairwoman after the creation of a parliamentary coalition between ODS, TOP 09, and the Public Affairs party.

As Chairwoman, Němcová implemented austerity measures for MPs. She announced that she would expose the names of "flying" deputies to reduce their unpopular domestic flights from Ostrava to Prague. She also canceled certain foreign trips for deputies and cut expenses on the representative villa of the Chamber of Deputies.

Presidential Aspirations and Opposition to Miloš Zeman

In 2012, speculations arose about Němcová's potential presidential candidacy. However, she declined to participate in ODS's primaries, citing her responsibilities as Chairwoman. During the 2013 presidential campaign, she criticized Miloš Zeman's behavior, warning that it could disgrace the state.

In 2013, the ODS put forward Němcová as their candidate for Prime Minister. However, President Zeman appointed Jiří Rusnok instead. Němcová voted against the dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies in 2013, believing it would give Zeman unchecked power.

Later Political Career

In the 2013 snap elections, Němcová ran for the Chamber of Deputies and was elected. She unsuccessfully ran for Vice-Chairwoman of the Chamber but became the head of the Mandate and Immunity Committee. In 2014, she ran for chairwoman of the ODS but lost.

In 2020, Němcová ran for the Senate and won. She became a senator on October 10, 2020, and left her position as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies.

Miroslava Němcová is married to Vladimír Němec and has a son named Pavel Němec.
