His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Fifth King of Bhutan

Early Life and Education

Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was born on February 21, 1980, as the eldest son of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and his third wife, Ashi Tshering Yangdon. He has one younger brother, one younger sister, and four half-sisters and brothers from his father's other wives. Namgyel received his primary education in Bhutan before attending various colleges in the United States and the United Kingdom. He eventually earned a degree in political science from the University of Oxford.

Accession to the Throne

In 2006, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck announced his intention to abdicate in favor of his son in 2008. However, he unexpectedly abdicated early on December 14, 2006, making Namgyel the Fifth King of Bhutan at the age of 26.

Official Coronation

The official coronation ceremony of King Namgyel took place on November 6, 2008. He is currently the youngest head of state in the world.

Reforming Bhutan

As King, Namgyel has overseen significant reforms in Bhutan. He has made efforts to modernize the government, promote economic development, and improve the lives of his people. He is also known for his advocacy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as the ultimate measure of national well-being.

International Relations

King Namgyel has represented Bhutan on numerous international occasions. He has met with world leaders and attended major events, such as the United Nations General Assembly. He has also played a key role in fostering relations with India, China, and other neighboring countries.

Personal Life

King Namgyel is not married. He has stated that he is in no rush to find a wife and that he will only marry when he finds someone who truly understands him and his responsibilities as King.
