Early Life and Education
Mirza Aliyev was born in 1883 (some sources indicate 1886) in the village of Govshan, now part of the Surakhani district of Baku, Azerbaijan, to a peasant family. From 1893 to 1896, he studied at a traditional school where he learned Persian and Arabic. He then attended the Baku Russian-Tatar City School from 1897 to 1899 and the Baku Vocational School from 1899 to 1900. He worked at Taghiyev's Baku factory from 1900 to 1901.
Early Acting Career
Aliyev made his stage debut in 1901, playing Shakhmar-bek in N.Vezirov's tragedy "Fahraddin's Woe." He studied under the guidance of D.M.R. Zeynalov. From 1901 to 1906, he was an actor in the "Baku Theater Lovers" troupe, and from 1906 to 1908, he organized and acted in the "Ghamiyet" troupe. From 1908 to 1912, he worked as an actor with the troupe of the "Nijat" Educational Society in Baku.
Touring and the Azerbaijani Soviet Theater
Between 1913 and 1915, Aliyev performed with the Astrakhan Tatar Theater Troupe. From 1916 to 1918, he graced the stage of theaters in Nuha, Elisavetpol, Tbilisi, Yerevan, Batumi, Derbent, and Nakhichevan. From 1918 to 1920, he joined the Baku Theater Troupe of the Hajibeyov brothers, performing operas and operettas. Aliyev toured extensively throughout cities along the Volga River, as well as in Iran and Turkey.
After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan in 1920, Aliyev actively participated in the organization of the Azerbaijani Soviet theater. From 1920 (with a brief hiatus from 1922 to 1924) until his death, he was an actor in the M. Azizbekov Azerbaijan Drama Theater in Baku. He was also one of the founders and actors (1922-1924) of the Baku Free "Satire-Agitation Theater" (now the Samad Vurgun Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theater).
Playwright and Party Member
Aliyev penned several one-act plays, including "Meshadi Marries" and "There Like That, Here Like This," which were staged at the Baku "Satire-Agitation Theater" from 1922 to 1924. In 1943, he became a member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
Death and Burial
Mirza Aliyev passed away on October 25, 1954. He was laid to rest in the Alley of Honor in Baku.
