Early Life and Education
Miichiro Yamaki, a renowned Japanese optical engineer, was born in 1933. After completing his university studies in 1957, he embarked on a path that would forever shape the world of photography.
Birth of Sigma
In September 1961, Yamaki founded a venture to produce and market his revolutionary invention: a teleconverter designed to enhance the capabilities of cameras. In March 1968, his enterprise evolved into Sigma Corporation, which quickly made a name for itself in the production of interchangeable lenses for cameras.
Leadership and Industry Involvement
Yamaki's passion for photography led him to assume leadership roles in various industry organizations. He served as the Director of the Photographic Society of Japan, President of the Japan Camera Industry Association for 16 years, and President of the Japan Optomechatronics Association for 23 years. Additionally, he advised the Japan Industrial Design Center for 12 years.
Recognition and Legacy
Yamaki's contributions to the photographic industry earned him numerous accolades. In 1989, he received the Photo Industry Award from Amateur Photographer magazine. The following year, he was appointed Honorary Chairman of the Japan Camera Industry Association. In 1994, he was inducted into the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) Hall of Fame.
The International Photographic Council, recognizing Yamaki's leadership, bestowed upon him the Leadership Award in 1998 and inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2008. The Photoimaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA) honored him as the "Person of the Year" in 2007 and presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. In 2011, he received the Gold Pin at Photokina, an international photography exhibition held in Cologne.
Family and Successor
Miichiro Yamaki was succeeded by his son, Kazuto Yamaki, who joined Sigma Corporation in 1993. Kazuto assumed leadership of the company after his father's untimely passing from liver cancer on January 18, 2012.
