Modest Ludwigovich Hoffman: A Distinguished Philologist, Poet, and Pushkinist
Early Life and Education
Modest Ludwigovich Hoffman was born in St. Petersburg in 1887. He graduated from the 1st Cadet Corps in 1905 but chose the path of literature over a promising career as a guardsman. He began teaching at the Bartashevich courses.
Literary Breakthrough
In 1907, Hoffman published "Book on Russian Poets of the Last Decade," which garnered widespread recognition.
Career at Pushkin House
After the Russian Revolution, Hoffman worked at the Pushkin House from 1920 onwards.
Emigration to France
In 1922, Hoffman traveled to France on a mission to acquire the collections of the Alexander Fedorovich Onegin museum. However, he never returned to his homeland.
Friendship with Dyahilev and Lifar
In Paris, Hoffman befriended the prominent artist Sergei Dyahilev and the dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar, who became a close friend of the Hoffman family.
Pushkin as Central Focus
Hoffman's primary academic interest was Pushkin and the Pushkin era. His notable works included:
