Early Life and Education
Dr. Moinuddin Ahmad Kureshi, an economist and Pakistani statesman, was born in Lahore, British India, on June 26, 1930. He is the son of Ahmad Kureshi and Khursheeda Jabin.
Career in International Finance
Kureshi began his professional career with the Government of Pakistan in 1953, holding various key positions in financial planning. From 1958 to 1970, he served at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in Washington, D.C. He rose through the ranks, becoming Vice President of the IMF from 1974 to 1977.
Executive Director of International Finance Corporation
In 1977, Kureshi was appointed Executive Vice President and later Chief Executive Officer of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank. He held this position until 1981.
Vice President of World Bank
Kureshi's career reached its pinnacle when he was appointed Vice President of the World Bank in 1981, a position he held until 1987.
Interim Prime Minister of Pakistan
In 1992, Kureshi left the World Bank and agreed to serve as interim Prime Minister of Pakistan from July 18 to October 19, 1993. Despite being a relatively unknown figure in Pakistani politics, Kureshi's government implemented comprehensive economic, social, and political reforms. He also organized national elections to establish a new democratically elected government.
Post-Premiership
After the establishment of a new government in Pakistan in October 1993, Kureshi retired from politics and established his own private business. He currently serves as Chairman and Managing Director of Emerging Market Cooperation, based in Washington, D.C.
Personal Life
Kureshi has authored numerous articles published in economic journals. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and collecting antiques. He is married to Elizabeth Lilo and has four children: two sons and two daughters.
