Early Life and Education
Abdullahi Mohamed was born into the influential Darod clan in Somalia. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Buffalo and, in 2009, a master's degree in political science from the same institution.
Diplomatic Career
Mohamed served as First Secretary at the Somali Embassy in the United States. He also held various administrative positions in the City of Buffalo and the New York State Department of Transportation.
Appointment as Prime Minister
On October 14, 2010, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed appointed Mohamed as Prime Minister. On October 31st, the Somali Parliament approved his appointment with a vote of 297 to 392.
Goals as Prime Minister
Mohamed prioritized combating violence in Somalia through military action and peace negotiations. He formed a smaller government of 18 ministers to replace the previous 39.
Resignation
On June 19, 2011, Mohamed resigned to facilitate the implementation of the United Nations-led process of power-sharing within the country.
