Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz: A Prominent Mauritanian Leader
Early Life and Military CareerMohammed Ould Abdel Aziz was born in 1956 in Akjoujt, Mauritania. He joined the Mauritanian military in 1977, where he rose through the ranks over several decades.
Involvement in Military Coups
In 2005, Abdel Aziz played a key role in a military coup that overthrew President Maaouiya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya. Subsequently, he was appointed commander of the presidential guard under the newly elected President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
2008 Military Coup and Rise to Power
In 2008, tensions arose between Abdel Aziz and President Abdallahi. On August 6, Abdel Aziz led a successful military coup, establishing an 11-member State Council and assuming its leadership. He subsequently appointed Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf as Prime Minister.
Presidency and Foreign Relations
In 2009, Abdel Aziz was elected President of Mauritania. He implemented several reforms and made significant changes to the country's foreign policy. Notably, in 2010, he broke off diplomatic relations with Israel, which made Mauritania one of only a few Arab countries to do so.
Leadership at the African Union
From 2014 to 2015, Abdel Aziz served as Chairman of the African Union (AU). During his tenure, he advocated for regional cooperation and played a key role in addressing challenges such as terrorism and food security.
