Mohamad Abdulkhamidov

Mohamad Abdulkhamidov is a Chechen opposition video blogger, human rights activist, political activist, and partisan of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (CRI).

Early Life and Family

Born on November 8, 1994, in the CRI, Mohamad is a member of the Varandoy teip. His father, Umalt Abdul-Majidovich Abdulkhamidov, was sentenced to death for anti-Soviet activities, later commuted to an 18-year prison term. After his release, he served in Dudayev's government during the First Chechen War. Mohamad's mother is a doctor and head of the cardiology department at Grozny Hospital. His older brother, Tumso Abdulkhamidov, is a renowned Chechen blogger and activist.

Emigration and Activism

In 2015, Mohamad fled Chechnya after his brother encountered issues with pro-Russian authorities. After an unsuccessful asylum request in Georgia, he settled in Germany in 2017. As a representative of the Chechen human rights association VayFond, Mohamad has been a vocal critic of the pro-Russian government in Chechnya. He maintains a YouTube vlog where he exposes human rights violations and participates in rallies condemning the situation in Chechnya.

Legal Issues and Allegations

In 2018, Mohamad was fined for reposting an article about the terrorist organization ISIS. He faced accusations of disseminating terrorist symbols despite sharing an article from a reputable German radio station. He was interrogated for four hours, with police expressing more interest in his views on the Charlie Hebdo attack than the repost. Mohamad believes the incident was a pretext for his arrest and an attempt to justify denying him asylum. He successfully appealed both the police actions and the court's decision.

Assassination Attempts

In 2020, an assassination attempt was made on Mohamad's brother, Tumso. A killer sent by pro-Russian authorities in Chechnya attacked Tumso while he slept. However, Tumso managed to subdue his attacker and hand him over to Swedish police. Mohamad has since stated that his brother had received repeated threats from Chechen authorities.

In 2021, a second assassination attempt was prevented in Germany after the Swedish court verdict in the Tumso case. The plot was linked to a blood feud declared against Tumso by pro-Russian Chechen speaker Magomed Daudov. Mohamad believes that the attempt was a way for the authorities to retaliate against Tumso by killing his brother. The German government accused Russia of the failed assassination, calling it state terrorism.

Recognition and Support

Mohamad's activism has received support and recognition. The German public prosecutor's office has defended him against false accusations, while the Swedish authorities have implicated Putin and pro-Russian Chechen authorities in the assassination attempt on Tumso. In 2019, Mohamad participated in a demonstration demanding an investigation into the murder of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili, a Chechen separatist killed in Germany.
