Early Life and Spiritual Journey

Reverend Moses, an Optina elder, was born in the town of Borisoglebsk, Yaroslavl Governorate, into the family of a merchant. Driven by a monastic spirit, Timothy (his baptismal name) and his younger brother Jonah visited several monasteries and renowned elders. Their frequent spiritual encounters instilled in them a burning desire for the monastic life.

The Path to Monasticism

They began their journey at the Sarov Assumption Desert, where they met the great Father Seraphim. After three years, Timothy was mysteriously led to the monks of the Roslavl forests, where he resided for a decade and received monastic tonsure under the name Moses.

The Transformation of Optina

Called to Optina Desert to establish and enhance the St. John the Baptist Skete, Father Moses soon became the abbot of the monastery itself, marking the beginning of its spiritual growth and fame. Under his leadership, Optina transformed into a flourishing garden. Old churches were renovated, new ones erected, and buildings for brethren's cells, a refectory, and a library were added.

The Cultivation of Souls

Despite his numerous responsibilities, Moses remained a true ascetic and warrior of Christ. He ignited in his brethren a zeal for God and strengthened their resolve to "fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith." During his abbacy, the tradition of eldership began in Optina. He invited Father Leo to the monastery and later entrusted spiritual guidance of the brethren to his successor, Father Macarius. It was during his time that the future great luminary of Optina, Father Ambrose, arrived as a novice.

Literary Contributions

Moses also emphasized book publishing: during his abbacy, sixteen volumes of patristic literature were released. "Someday," he said, "someone may read this or that book, and the spiritual benefit of one soul will reward all our efforts. God grant that someday there will be fruit." He also assembled an extensive and valuable monastic library.

A Life of Service

Moses devoted all his energies to serving others. The burden of his abbacy and his tireless efforts for the monastery and its brethren filled his days. While lacking the charismatic gifts of Fathers Leo and Macarius, his greatest miracle was Optina itself—a thriving and renowned monastery that became a center of Russia's spiritual life.

Final Blessings and Legacy

Shortly before his death on June 6, 1862, Moses received the Great Angelic Schema. News of his tonsure and impending passing drew a multitude of monks and laymen to his bedside. With tears and reverence, they sought his final blessing. The dying abbot, holding a cross in his failing hands, blessed all who approached and distributed images.
