Momčilo Krajišnik: Speaker and Wartime Figure

Momčilo Krajišnik served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Republika Srpska from October 1991 to November 1995.

Trial and Conviction

In 2000, Krajišnik was arrested by SFOR peacekeepers at his residence in Pale. He was charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) with orchestrating ethnic cleansing in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995. The ICTY sentenced him to 27 years in prison, despite his denial of the charges. The court acquitted him of genocide, although his defense team demanded his acquittal on all counts.

Controversial Arrest

Krajišnik's arrest was marked by alleged excessive force. Peacekeepers blew up the entrance to his home, restraining his elderly parents and young sons. He was taken into custody without being allowed to dress, wearing only slippers and a bathrobe.

Legal Proceedings

Krajišnik's trial began on February 3, 2004, and concluded on August 31, 2006. The tribunal found him guilty of numerous crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war.
