Marte Mjøs Persen

Early Life and Education

Marte Mjøs Persen was born on April 24, 1975, in Norway. She is the daughter of Svein Persen, a teacher, and Eli Hedvig Mjøs, a consultant. Persen received her primary education from 1982 to 1986 in Stord and Bergen. She later specialized in music at Bergen Cathedral School from 1990 to 1993 and Stord Upper Secondary School from 1995 to 1996. In 2003, she earned a bachelor's degree in Culture and Social Sciences from the University of Bergen, where she studied literature, sociology, and women's and gender studies.

Career in Politics

Persen's political career began in 2003 when she joined the Norwegian Labor Party. From 2003 to 2007, she served as Deputy Chair of the Red Electoral Alliance and as a member of the Bergen City Council from 2003 to 2007. In 2011, she became Chair of the Bergen Labor Party and held this position until 2015. She was also Chair of the Labor Party in Hordaland County from 2017 to 2019 and has been Chair of the Labor Party in Vestland County since 2019. Persen has served on the Labor Party's central board from 2011 to 2015 and since 2019.

Local Government and Public Service

From 2015 to 2021, Persen served as Mayor of Bergen. During her tenure, she played key roles in the city's health and welfare committees, the Port of Bergen, and the KODE Art Museum Foundation. She has also been a member of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) and served on various LO committees related to family policy and gender equality.

National Government

Persen was elected to the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) from Hordaland County in the 2021 parliamentary elections. She led the Labor Party's candidate list in the county. On October 14, 2021, she was appointed Minister of Petroleum and Energy in the government of Jonas Gahr Støre.

Personal Life

Marte Mjøs Persen is married to Nils-Olav Nøss and has four children: a grown son and triplets (two boys and a girl).
