Foundation and Early Success
In the late 1980s, Igor Zagray (guitar, vocals) and Sergey Maslyuk (drums) founded the rock band in their hometown. Soon after, Fedor Ivanov joined as vocalist and Oleg Buratsky on bass. The band quickly gained popularity in their region, winning the "Taganrog 88" festival and becoming laureates at "Rostov 88."
Transition and Revival
In 1989, Igor Zagray's military service forced the band to pause its activities. Upon his return in 1991, he relocated to St. Petersburg and met Kirill Matveev, a former member of "Koroly Dorog." The duo became the core of the band for many years. Reborn as "Monastyr," the group resumed live performances in 1990.
Studio Debut and Success
Throughout the early 1990s, the band's lineup included Alexey Ilyin (lead guitar), Alexey Vavilov (drums), and Dmitry Hait (drums). In 1994, with a refreshed lineup featuring Mikhail Vladimirov (lead guitar, vocals), and Igor Fedorov (drums), Monastyr recorded their self-titled debut album under the production of Andrey Tropillo. The album's release in 1995 brought the band wider recognition through radio airplay.
Changes and New Directions
In 1995, Igor Zagray departed from the band. Kirill Matveev transitioned to rhythm guitar and began assembling a new lineup for their second album, "V Etu Noch," released in 1996. The album featured Vadim Arbuzov (lead guitar, vocals), Alexey Krivsky (bass), and Alexander Fomin (drums). After the album's recording, Arbuzov and Fomin emigrated abroad.
Current Lineup and Recent Success
Monastyr's current lineup stabilized in 1998 and includes Matveev on rhythm guitar and vocals, Yaroslav Ivanov on lead guitar, Dmitry Savostikov on bass, Vadim Kunyaev on computers, and Artem Blum as manager. The band has released a number of songs for their upcoming album and filmed a music video for "Russian Romance."
