Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Kip Winger was born in Denver, Colorado, on June 21, 1961, into a family steeped in jazz music. He spent his childhood playing in a band called Blackwood Creek with his brothers, Nate and Paul, and friend Peter Fletcher. The band disbanded in 1980 but has reunited occasionally, most recently embarking on a new album.
Classical Influences and Professional Debut
At the age of 16, Winger's musical horizons expanded after hearing Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Inspired, he sent a demo to Alan Parsons, who responded and later enlisted Winger as a lead vocalist for The Alan Parsons Project.
New York City and Collaborative Projects
In 1982, Winger relocated to New York City, where he studied composition under Edgar Grana and supported himself by waiting tables. His first commercial success came in 1984 when he co-wrote a song for KIX's "Midnite Dynamite." He also collaborated with Reb Beach on Fiona Flannigan's "Beyond The Pale" and later joined Alice Cooper's band, contributing to two albums before departing in 1987.
Formation of Winger
After leaving Alice Cooper, Winger returned to New York City and began writing songs with Reb Beach. They recruited drummer Rod Morgenstein and keyboardist Paul Taylor, initially performing as Sahara before changing their name to Winger at Alice Cooper's suggestion. The band released three albums before the members pursued solo projects. Winger's discography now includes nine albums.
Solo Career and Personal Tragedy
Winger relocated to New Mexico to build his solo career, studying at a university with Richard Hermann. In 1996, he suffered a devastating loss when his wife, Beatrice, was killed in a car accident. In Santa Fe, he recorded three albums: "This Conversation Seems Like a Dream," "Down Incognito," and "Songs From The Ocean Floor."
Nashville and Winger Reunion
In 2002, Winger moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked on his fourth album, "From the Moon to the Sun," with Cenk Eroglu. In September 2006, he reunited Winger, releasing a fourth album and embarking on a supporting tour.
Recent Activities
In October 2009, Winger released "Karma." He has performed with the Sin City Sinners in Las Vegas and has organized and performed at the Rock Fantasy Camp, alongside notable rock icons such as Roger Daltry, Steven Tyler, and Duff McKagan.
