Early Life and Dance Career
On June 18, 1990, Monica Barbaro was born under the Gemini zodiac sign in San Francisco, California. She grew up in Mill Valley and was raised alongside her older siblings, Michael and Eva. Despite her parents' divorce during her early childhood, Barbaro excelled in ballet and contemporary dance. Her love for classical dance began with "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky, while her modern dance training included salsa, flamenco, and West African styles.
At the age of 12, Barbaro's passion for acting sparked during a school production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." While pursuing a dance education at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, she began taking acting classes as electives. Graduating in 2010, Barbaro left dance behind and returned to San Francisco, where she enrolled at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.
After years of commercials and student films, Barbaro's breakthrough came with the viral short film "It's Not About the Nail." The film's success propelled her to Los Angeles, where she relocated and established her acting career.
In Hollywood, Barbaro gained recognition with roles in the TV series "Stitchers," "Lethal Weapon," and "The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." She became a recurring cast member in "Unreal," "Chicago Justice," "The Good Cop," and "Splitting Up Together."
Her major film debut came in 2022 with the blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick," where she played Natasha Trace, the only female pilot in Pete Mitchell's (Tom Cruise) team. Barbaro's preparation for the role involved intense training in flight maneuvers, underwater escapes, and piloting various aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet.
Rumors of a relationship with actor Connor Tillman surfaced in 2014 when photographs of them appeared on Barbaro's Instagram. However, in 2021, the couple reportedly split and removed joint pictures and mutual followings. Currently, Barbaro is dedicated to her work, her dog, August, and shares glimpses of her personal life on social media.
In 2023, Barbaro starred opposite Diego Boneta in the romantic comedy "At Midnight." Her dance background proved valuable as she showcased her salsa and tango skills in the film. She also took on a leading role in Netflix's action series "Fubar," alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, and joined the cast of "Going Electric," a film about Bob Dylan's iconic performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
