Early Life and Education
Monika Mæland was born into a family of typographers. She attended Arendal Gymnasium, graduating in 1987. She went on to study law at the University of Bergen, graduating in 1991, and later obtained a Candidate of Law degree from the University of Oslo in 1994.
Legal Career and Political Beginnings
Mæland began her legal career at the firm Drevland & Co. in 1994. She entered politics in 1999, being elected to the Bergen Municipal Council. She held various leadership positions in the council, including Chairwoman of the Municipality (1999-2003) and Mayor (2003-2013).
Mayor of Bergen
As Mayor of Bergen, Mæland led three cabinets (2003-2013). She initiated the Bergen Light Rail project and established the city as a leader in sustainable transportation. Her tenure was marked by political cooperation with various parties, including the Conservative Party, Christian Democratic Party, and Progress Party.
Rise in Conservative Party
Mæland has been actively involved in the Conservative Party since 1983. She has held leadership positions in the party's youth organization, female forum, and various local and regional branches. In 2002, she became Chairwoman of the Conservative Party in Hordaland County.
Ministerial Appointments
In 2013, Mæland was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry in the government of Erna Solberg. She later served as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development (2018-2020) and Minister of Justice and Public Security (2020-2021).
Current Position
Mæland remains an active member of the Conservative Party and a prominent figure in Norwegian politics. She continues to advocate for economic growth, regional development, and the strengthening of public services.
