Moshe Carmel: A Life of Military and Political Service
Early Life and Kibbutz FoundingMoshe Carmel was born on January 17, 1911, in Mińsk Mazowiecki, Russian Empire (now Poland). In 1924, at the age of 13, he immigrated to Palestine. He became one of the founders of Kibbutz Naan and actively participated in the youth movement Ha-Noar ha-Oved ve ha-Lomed.
Military Career and Operation Hiram
During the 1939-1941 period, Carmel was imprisoned by British authorities. In the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, he commanded the Carmeli Brigade, which gained prominence during Operation Hiram.
Political Life and Ministry of Transportation
Carmel was elected to the Knesset in 1955 as a member of the Ahdut HaAvoda party and was appointed Minister of Transportation. In 1956, he participated in a critical meeting in Paris with Moshe Dayan, Shimon Peres, and Golda Meir to discuss potential joint action against Egypt with France and England.
Later Life and Legacy
Moshe Carmel passed away in Tel Aviv at the age of 92 and was laid to rest in the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery. He was survived by his two daughters. Carmel's life and service to Israel left a lasting legacy in the realms of military and political leadership.
