Biography of Mohammed Atta
Early LifeMohammed Atta was born in 1968 in the city of Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta, Egypt. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Cairo. He studied architecture at Cairo University and continued his education in Hamburg, Germany after graduation in 1990. It was during his time in Hamburg that he became acquainted with future co-conspirators Marwan al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah, as well as Al-Qaeda member Ramzi bin al-Shibh.
Religious Beliefs
Atta became increasingly religious after moving to Germany in 1992, frequently attending the local mosque. He was known to be critical of US policies in the Middle East and held negative views towards the Egyptian ruling elite. In 1995, he traveled to Aleppo, Syria to study the urban landscape and the conflict between Arab civilization and modernity. Atta's religious fervor continued to grow, and he eventually joined Al-Qaeda.
Time in Germany
After completing his studies in Germany, Atta intended to return to Egypt but was unable to find suitable employment. In 1998, he formed a radical Islamist cell with his co-conspirators in Hamburg. They frequently met to discuss their plans and express their discontent with US actions. In late 1999, Atta traveled to Afghanistan to meet with Osama bin Laden and other Al-Qaeda leaders.
Stay in the US
In June 2000, Atta and al-Shehhi arrived in the US to pursue flight training. They enrolled in flight schools in Venice, Florida and later in Sarasota. Atta obtained his private pilot's license and continued his training to become a commercial pilot. During this time, Atta maintained contact with other co-conspirators and made preparations for the 9/11 attacks.
Role in 9/11 Attacks
On September 11, 2001, Atta piloted American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. He played a key role as one of the leaders of the 19 suicide hijackers who carried out the terrorist attacks.
Overall, Mohammed Atta's life was marked by his radicalization and involvement in the planning and execution of the 9/11 attacks. His religious beliefs and discontent with US policies led him to join Al-Qaeda and carry out one of the most devastating acts of terrorism in history.
