Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski

Early Life

Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski was born in Ahar, Southern Azerbaijan, Persia, into the Tokhmagly tribe of the Ustajly tribal confederation. He was the son of Mustafakuli Khan-Karadaghski and the grandfather of Gasanalialiaga-Khan-Karadaghski.

Military Career

Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski became a distinguished military commander in the Persian army. During the Second Russo-Persian War (1826-1828), he fought on the side of the Russian army.

Migration to Shusha

In 1828, Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski relocated to Shusha with his family and retinue. By imperial decree of Emperor Nicholas I, he was awarded the rank of major and elevated to hereditary nobility, adopting the surname Khan-Karadaghski.

Service in the Russian Military

In Shusha, Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski served in the military commandant's office and became chief of the secret service. In 1835, he was promoted to the rank of colonel. He developed a close friendship with General-Field Marshal I.F. Paskevich.

Legacy

Mehdiqulu Khan-Karadaghski is remembered as the last khan of the Karadag Khanate. His military prowess and cooperation with the Russian Empire earned him significant recognition and rewards.
