Muriel Bowser: Mayor of the District of Columbia
Early Life and EducationMuriel Bowser was born in 1955 to a Catholic family in Washington, D.C. She received her bachelor's degree from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later earned a master's degree in public policy from American University in Washington, D.C.
Political Career
Advisory Neighborhood Commission and City Council
In 2004, Bowser was elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission for Ward 4. Two years later, she joined the campaign team of Adrian Fenty, who was running for mayor. Following Fenty's election victory, Bowser ran for and won a seat on the Council of the District of Columbia in a special election.
Mayor of the District of Columbia
In 2014, Bowser was elected Mayor of the District of Columbia with 53.9% of the vote. She was inaugurated on January 2, 2015, and re-elected in 2018 with 76% of the vote. As mayor, Bowser has focused on issues such as affordable housing, education, and public safety.

Capital Riot Response
In January 2021, Bowser declared a 15-day state of emergency following the Capitol riot. She has since been praised for her leadership during the crisis.
Personal Life
In 2018, Bowser announced that she had adopted an infant, making her the first single mother to serve as mayor of the District of Columbia.
