Early Life and Immigration
Nasima Razmyar was born on September 13, 1984, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father, a diplomat, moved the family to Moscow in 1989 and to Finland in 1992 after the fall of President Mohammad Najibullah. Razmyar's family was granted political asylum.
Education and Professional Career
In 2004, Razmyar graduated from Töölö High School in Helsinki, where she studied education and political science. She worked for the International Organization for Migration from 2006 to 2007 and later for the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and Monicanaiset, an organization that supports immigrant women facing domestic violence.
Political Involvement
Razmyar's political career began in 2010 when she received the Refugee of the Year Award for her work against discrimination and inequality. In 2011, she ran for the Social Democratic Party in the parliamentary elections but was unsuccessful. She served as a parliamentary assistant, political assistant, and press secretary within the Social Democratic parliamentary group before running for the European Parliament in 2014.
In 2015, Razmyar was elected to the Finnish Parliament, becoming one of the first immigrant MPs alongside Ozan Yanar of the Green Party. She resigned from Parliament in 2017 to become Deputy Mayor of Helsinki.

As Deputy Mayor, Razmyar is responsible for culture and leisure in Helsinki. She has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion, promoting the city as a welcoming place for people of all backgrounds.
Candidacy for Mayor
In 2020, Razmyar announced her candidacy for Mayor of Helsinki in the 2021 municipal elections. If elected, she would become the city's first female mayor and the first Muslim mayor of a major European city.
