Early Life and Education
Kazım Karabekir was born in Istanbul in 1882. He was the son of an Ottoman military officer and spent his childhood traveling throughout the empire due to his father's postings. Following his father's death in 1993, he returned to Istanbul with his mother and received his primary education in the Zeyrek district.
Military Career
Kazım Karabekir began his military education at the Fatih Military School in 1894. He later graduated from the prestigious Küleli Military School in 1899 and the War College in Istanbul in 1902. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Third Army in Macedonia, where he fought against Greek and Bulgarian guerrillas.
In 1911, Karabekir was promoted to senior captain and changed his surname from Zeyrek to Karabekir. During the Balkan Wars, he fought against the Bulgarians and was captured in 1913. He was released after the signing of the peace treaty in 1914.
World War I
Prior to World War I, Karabekir served in Istanbul and was sent on missions to Austria, Germany, France, and Switzerland. Upon his return to Istanbul, he headed the intelligence department of the General Staff and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He played a significant role in the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915 and fought against Armenian and Russian forces in the Caucasus region.
National Assembly Speaker
After World War I, Karabekir supported Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's nationalist movement and became the commander of the 15th Army Corps in 1919. He was elected Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1920.
Opposition and Resignation
However, Karabekir later became an opponent of Atatürk's policies. He opposed the abolition of the monarchy and resigned from military service in 1924 to focus on his political career. In 1926, he was arrested and tried for conspiracy, but was acquitted.
Legacy
Kazım Karabekir is remembered as a renowned Ottoman and Turkish military leader and politician. He was a key figure in the Turkish War of Independence and a respected figure in the early years of the Turkish Republic.
