Military Career

Education and Early Career

Myint Swe graduated from the Defense Services Academy in 1971 as part of the 15th intake. He rose through the ranks to become the Brigadier General and Commander of the 11th Light Infantry Division in 1997.

Rise to Command

Four years later, he was appointed Commander of the Southeast Command and entered the State Peace and Development Council. He was subsequently promoted to Major General.

Intelligence and Operations

In 2004, Myint Swe became the Chief of Military Security Directorate after the arrest of Khin Nyunt. He also led the Bureau of Special Operations-5 (BSO-5) from January 2006. As the Commander of the Yangon Military Command, Myint Swe arrested the family of U Ne Win following an alleged coup attempt in 2002; apprehended Khin Nyunt and his associates in 2004; and purged military intelligence after the Saffron Revolution in 2007. His actions in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis drew criticism.

Political Career

Vice President (2016-2021)

On March 11, 2016, the military bloc of MPs in the Union Assembly nominated Myint Swe for the position of Vice President of Myanmar. He received 213 votes on March 15, 2016, becoming the First Vice President in Thein Sein's cabinet and taking the oath of office on March 30, 2016.

Acting President (2021-Present)

Following a military coup d'état on February 1, 2021, Myint Swe was appointed as the acting President of Myanmar.
