Early Life and Education

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski was born in Łódź, Poland, and pursued his higher education at the University of Łódź, graduating with a degree in economics in 1971.

Academic and Professional Career

During the 1970s, Saryusz-Wolski joined the University of Łódź as a lecturer and became a renowned expert on European Communities. In 1980, he became a member of the Solidarity trade union, a pivotal movement in Poland's transition to democracy.

Political Journey

After the political transformation in 1989, Saryusz-Wolski was appointed Director of the Center for European Studies at the University of Łódź. In 1991, he became Poland's first Plenipotentiary for European Integration and Foreign Aid. He held this position until 1996, despite frequent government changes.

In 2000, he returned to the government as Secretary of the Committee for European Integration under Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek. Saryusz-Wolski played a significant role in the Nice переговоров negotiations that year.

European Parliament

On June 13, 2004, Saryusz-Wolski was elected to the European Parliament as a candidate for Civic Platform. He received the highest vote share in his constituency (16.92%) and went on to become Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2007.

In March 2006, Saryusz-Wolski was elected Vice-President of the European People's Party (EPP) for a three-year term.
