Early Life and Education
Najat Vallaud-Belkacem was born on October 4, 1977, in the rural Moroccan village of Had Beni Chiker, near Nador. The second of seven children, she has Spanish and Algerian ancestry. In 1982, she and her mother moved to France, where her father worked as a construction worker in the city of Amiens. It was here that Vallaud-Belkacem grew up and attended school.
In 2002, she graduated from the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). While at Sciences Po, she met Boris Vallaud, whom she later married on August 27, 2005.
Political Career
Vallaud-Belkacem joined the Socialist Party of France in 2002 and became part of the team of Gérard Collomb, the mayor of Lyon. She served as campaign secretary for Ségolène Royal during her 2007 presidential campaign in France and in 2009 for the Socialist Party's primary election.
From 2008, she was an advisor to the city of Lyon, responsible for major youth and community events. From May 16, 2012, to August 25, 2014, she served as Minister for Women's Rights, while also holding other political offices.
Minister of National Education
On August 25, 2014, Vallaud-Belkacem became the first French woman to hold the position of Minister of National Education. She held this role until May 17, 2017, when she lost her ministerial portfolio after the formation of Édouard Philippe's government.
