Early Life and Career in Journalism
Namig Abbasov was born on February 22, 1940, in Baku, Azerbaijan. After completing his journalism degree in 1962, he worked as a journalist for the newspaper "Absheron" from 1962 to 1976.
Entry into Politics and Party Work
In 1970, Abbasov transitioned to political work. He held various roles within the Communist Party of Azerbaijan (CPA), including Head of Department and Second Secretary of the Absheron District Committee.
Career in National Security
In 1977, Abbasov began his tenure in the state security apparatus. He received specialized training at the Higher School of the KGB USSR in 1979 and subsequently held positions as Deputy Head of the Second Department (Counterintelligence) and Head of the Second Department of the KGB Azerbaijan SSR. He later rose to the ranks of Deputy Chairman for Personnel and Deputy Chairman of the KGB Azerbaijan SSR.
Rise within the Ministry of National Security
From 1992 to 1994, Abbasov served as Deputy and First Deputy Minister of National Security of Azerbaijan. He was appointed Acting Minister of National Security in October 1994 and officially became Minister on March 22, 1995. After a brief resignation, he was reappointed to the post on October 27, 1998. Abbasov was promoted to the rank of General-Lieutenant and later to General-Colonel in January 2002.
Diplomatic Service in Uzbekistan
In 2004, Abbasov retired from his position as Minister of National Security. On December 16, 2004, he was appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Uzbekistan, serving until October 31, 2012.
