Annemiek Jorritsma-Lebbink: A Dutch Politician's Journey
Annemiek Jorritsma-Lebbink is a Dutch politician who has served in various capacities at both the national and provincial levels. She is a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party.
Ministerial Roles
From 2017 to 2021, Jorritsma-Lebbink served as Minister of Defense in the Netherlands' Third Rutte Cabinet. During her tenure, she managed the country's armed forces and oversaw defense policy.
Provincial Governorship
Prior to her appointment as Defense Minister, Jorritsma-Lebbink served as Royal Commissioner (Governor) of the Province of Overijssel from 2011 to 2017. In this role, she represented the Dutch monarchy and oversaw the province's administration.
Parliamentary Representation
Jorritsma-Lebbink has been an active member of the Dutch Parliament, serving in both the Second and First Chambers. She was elected to the Second Chamber from 1989 to 2001 and again from 2010 to 2011. She also served as a member of the First Chamber in 2011.
Local Government
Before her entry into national politics, Jorritsma-Lebbink served as Burgomaster (Mayor) of the municipality of Hof van Twente from 2001 to 2007. In this capacity, she was responsible for local governance and community affairs.
Resignation from Defense Ministry
On September 17, 2021, Jorritsma-Lebbink resigned as Minister of Defense after the Second Chamber expressed no confidence in her handling of the evacuation from Afghanistan following the fall of Kabul. Ferdinand Grapperhaus, Minister of Justice and Security, was appointed as acting Defense Minister.
Recognition
In 2001, Jorritsma-Lebbink was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau for her service to the Netherlands.
