Early Life and Education
Nancy Northup was born in Kokomo, Indiana, in 1960 and grew up in Texas, California, and New York. She attended the Columbia School of Allendale in Rochester, New York. Northup graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in 1981 and from Columbia University School of Law in 1984, where she was a Kent Scholar and articles editor of the Columbia Law Review.
Legal Career
Northup served as the founding director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. From 1989 to 1996, she worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Deputy Chief of the Appeals Division for the Southern District of New York. She clerked for Judge Alvin B. Rubin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans. Northup holds adjunct faculty appointments at New York University School of Law and Columbia Law School, teaching constitutional law and human rights.
Protecting Reproductive Rights
Northup became president of the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York in 1996. As president, Northup has led the center to major victories, including the Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Personal Life
Northup resides in New York City and is married to Jim Johnson, a New York City corporate advisor and former candidate for Governor of New Jersey.
