Early Life and Career
Born into a family of textile merchants, Arturo Merzario began his racing career at the age of 24 in the Italian touring car championship, where he achieved significant success in 1965, winning 10 class victories out of 10 starts in a Mini Cooper.
Alfa Romeo and Sports Car Racing
In 1966, Merzario joined Alfa Romeo's sports car team, where he enjoyed victories at Mugello (co-driving with Lucien Bianchi and Nino Vaccarella) and second-place finishes at Imola and the Targa Florio (co-driving with Ignazio Giunti). He also secured a fourth-place finish at the 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Formula 2 and Formula 1
In 1969, Merzario competed in both sports car racing with Alfa Romeo and the European Formula 2 championship with Tecno. From 1970 to 1971, he raced in the Formula 1 World Championship with the McLaren and March teams, which had the backing of Alfa Romeo, but failed to score any championship points.
Post-Formula 1 Career
After Alfa Romeo's withdrawal from Formula 1, Merzario continued racing with Tecno, Ferrari (standing in for the injured Clay Regazzoni at the 1972 French Grand Prix), and Williams, but he never managed to finish in the points. In 1974, he briefly competed in sports car racing with Abarth before retiring from his racing career.
