Natalya Lagoda: From Stardom to Tragedy
The 1990s were remembered not only for economic difficulties but also for a change in values, including in the arts and show business. Among the rising stars was singer Natalya Lagoda, a girl from the Ukrainian province. She conquered the capital with her beauty and unique voice, becoming a Playboy star - but within three years, she ended her short career with a suicide attempt. Natalya's subsequent story was one of hard work and an early tragic death.

Early Life
Natalya Vasilyevna Lagoda was born on March 4, 1974, in Cherkassy. As a dark-haired and beautiful girl, she was admired by many classmates and boys in the neighborhood. After completing eighth grade at School No. 26 and a vocational school, where she learned sewing and knitting, Natalya married Eduard Fisak and gave birth to her son Dima in 1992. However, the life of a provincial housewife did not appeal to her. Natalya left her infant son in her mother's care and set out to find happiness in the capital.
From Stripper to Singer
Natalya visited modeling agencies but was rejected everywhere, despite her striking appearance and stunning figure. To make a living, she sold vegetables, lived in the cheapest accommodation, and continued her search for a job she considered worthy of herself. Eventually, she managed to become a dancer at the strip club "Dolls." One of the visitors, rumored to be a co-owner of the club, was wealthy businessman Alexander Karmanov. Natalya recalled that he came to her performances every evening, and his payment for their interaction (even for a simple conversation) amounted to a thousand dollars. He then started managing her career. The stripper turned into a bright singer.
Rise to Fame
The video clips of the emerging soloist's songs were shot in Thailand, showcasing Natalya's expressive face and exquisite figure in glamorous revealing outfits. Her stunning tan against tropical landscapes instantly made Natalya Lagoda's videos hits. Despite receiving some critical comments about her vocal abilities and repertoire, she unquestionably became a prominent phenomenon in the Russian music industry of that time. Her fans argue that even now she would be a worthy competitor to many contemporary stars.
Playboy and Decline
Natalya's song "Malenkiy Buddha" became a chart-topper in 1998 and was released on a CD. She was invited for a photoshoot in Playboy and became a cover girl. Natalya basked in the glory of crowds of fans, articles and photos in magazines, applause, and flowers. In 1998, several more music videos for her songs, including "Ne Obeshchai," "Ya Khoroshaya," "Nasha Lyubov," "Chto zhe Ya Nagovorila," and "Marsianskaya Lyubov," were released, becoming a constant presence on television screens.
However, her success began to decline the following year. In 1999, Natalya recorded only one song, "Chto zhe Ya Nagovorila." She was no longer invited to television shows, although her old clips were still aired. In 2000, she recorded three more songs: "Ula-la," "Razve Ne Tak," and "Vrut Tvoy Mne Glaza." The title of the last composition proved prophetic, as her relationship with Alexander Karmanov deteriorated significantly. He stopped staying at home and paid less attention to her career.
Tragic Outcome
A video clip for the song "Vrut Tvoy Mne Glaza," filmed in 2001, became symbolic. The yacht sailing into the sunset turned out to be a symbolic farewell to her performing career, something that no one would witness again. Natalya suspected Karmanov of infidelity, but she didn't know the name of his rival. When Olga Orlova, a member of the group "Blestyashchie," visited Natalya, she congratulated her sincerely on her upcoming marriage and pregnancy. Unexpectedly, Natalya heard that Olga's future husband and the father of her child were Alexander Karmanov. The conversation ended in a fight, and Natalya's nervous breakdown led to severe consequences, worsening after Olga and Alexander's marriage (which lasted less than three years).
Natalya's conditions after parting with her beloved became the envy of many: a good apartment in the center of Moscow, fame, and excellent looks could have been a good starting point for a fresh start. However, for Lagoda, it lost all meaning. Rumors (though unconfirmed) circulated about her alcohol and drug use, and she sought treatment from a personal psychiatrist, but she never fully recovered.
On September 21, 2001, she said goodbye to her eight-year-old son, who was present in the apartment, and despite his desperate cries, she jumped from the fifth floor of the three-room apartment given to her by her former lover. Neighbors called an ambulance, and Natalya was registered as an "unknown" patient at Botkin Hospital. It took her mother a week to locate and identify her disfigured daughter. Alexander Karmanov paid for twelve complex operations, including skull trepanation and facial reconstruction, saving Natalya's life. However, any possibility of performances was out of the question. Natalya returned to Cherkassy.
The Final Years
For a while, Natalya lived with dreams of being able to perform again. She then married her former classmate Vitaliy Semenenko. Despite warnings from her family, particularly her brother, about her future husband's alcoholism, she did not listen. In 2004, Natalya sold her Moscow apartment, and she and her husband moved to Luhansk, where they settled in a tiny rented apartment and used the money to open an auto service center with a large basement. Natalya had to perform many car repair operations - using a welding machine, polishing car bodies, and cleaning interiors.
Natalya did not complain about her life. Her grown-up son moved to Tambov, and visiting relatives noticed that alcohol was increasingly taking up space in the family's life. Television workers, who occasionally invited Lagoda to participate in programs, confirmed this. Her last appearance on TV, in which the former singer talked about the military actions in Luhansk, took place on May 23, 2015. Just a week later, on May 29, Natalya Lagoda passed away.
According to her younger sister, who attended the funeral, Natalya's last days were spent in horrific conditions - in the basement of her own service center, which had turned into a homeless shelter, without medical assistance, and with vodka instead of medication. The cause of death was severe pneumonia and alcohol poisoning.
