Moldova's Prime Minister: Natalia Gavrilița
Early Life and EducationNatalia Gavrilița was born on September 21, 1977, in Malaiești village, Moldova. In 2000, she graduated from the Law Faculty of Moldova State University. In 2005, she earned a Master's degree in Public Policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Career in International Organizations
From 2000 to 2003, Gavrilița served as a Policy Assistant at the Bureau of Economic and Political Affairs in the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău. She subsequently worked as an Advisor in the World Bank's Europe and Central Asia Vice President's Office in Washington, D.C. (2005). In 2005-2006, she was an Intern and then a Consultant in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs in Brussels.
Public Service in Moldova
From 2007 to 2008, Gavrilița was Head of the Policy and Macroeconomic Program Development Directorate in Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Trade. She later became Head of the Program and Aid Coordination Directorate in the Moldovan Government (2008-2009). In 2009-2013, she served as Senior Consultant and then Portfolio Manager in Oxford Policy Management, a UK-based consultancy firm focused on developing countries.
Returning to Moldova in 2013, Gavrilița worked as Chief Advisor in the Ministry of Education's Policy Analysis, Monitoring, and Evaluation Directorate (2013-2014), and later as State Secretary of the Ministry of Education (2014-2015).
Political Involvement and Government Service
In 2015-2019, Gavrilița was the General Director of the Global Innovation Fund (GIF) in London. In 2017, she joined Maia Sandu's Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), becoming its Vice-Chairperson.
In 2019, Gavrilița was appointed Minister of Finance in Sandu's government, a role she held until the government's collapse in November of that year. Following early parliamentary elections in 2021, she was elected to the Moldovan Parliament.
Prime Ministership
In 2021, President Sandu nominated Gavrilița for Prime Minister. After her government was initially rejected by Parliament, she was re-nominated and subsequently approved by a majority vote on August 6, 2021. Gavrilița became Moldova's first female Prime Minister.
Family
Gavrilița is married to Vladimir Gavrilița, a former Ministry of the Interior employee who worked in Maia Sandu's Prime Minister's Control Corps.
