For hardened criminals, a prison sentence becomes more of a punishment than an opportunity to rethink their lives. However, there are exceptions. One of the most dangerous Australian robbers, Nathan Jones, decided to turn his life around after serving time in prison and found a more peaceful application for his abilities.
A Life of Crime
Before his wrestling career, Nathan Jones used his remarkable physical abilities in less honorable ways. From 1985 to 1987, he committed eight armed robberies, making him one of the most wanted criminals in Australia. Eventually, authorities caught up with Jones and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. However, he only served seven years as his conditions were eventually eased, and he was sent to compulsory work in 1994.
A New Path
During his time in prison, Nathan Jones developed a passion for weightlifting, specifically powerlifting. His abilities in this sport were truly impressive, and he quickly became the national champion of Australia in powerlifting. Jones actively participated in strength competitions and achieved remarkable results. On July 29, 1995, he represented Australia at the World Strength Championship in Callander, Scotland, where he took first place, surpassing the strongest man of 1993, Gary Taylor.
A Wrestling Career
After his success in powerlifting, Nathan Jones worked as a bodyguard for millionaire Rene Rivkin before venturing into professional wrestling. His first taste of fame came from participating in the World Wrestling All-Stars 'Inception' project alongside Rove McManus. On April 7, 2002, Nathan Jones became the WWA World Heavyweight Champion, but he lost the title to Scott Steiner just five days later.
In October 2002, Jones, along with Jon Heidenreich, became the NWA Intercontinental Tag Team Champions. Despite successfully defending their titles against Jimmy Snuka Jr. and The Predator, they eventually lost to Naoya Ogawa and Shinya Hashimoto. Jones also had a stint in World Wrestling Entertainment in 2003 but did not achieve significant success.
After leaving WWE in December 2003, Jones briefly disappeared from the wrestling scene. He was scheduled to return in a fight against Mark Mercedes in 2004 but did not show up. In 2005, Jones had three fights in World Series Wrestling before officially announcing his retirement from wrestling.
