Nathan Tinkler was born in Inverell, New South Wales, Australia, in 1976. He pursued an electrical apprenticeship at Muswellbrook TAFE before beginning his career as an electrician at a coal mine.

At the age of 26, Tinkler established his own business servicing mining equipment. His major breakthrough came in 2006 when he took out a $500,000 loan to purchase a mine.
