William Hamilton Cartmell
William Hamilton Cartmell was an American track and field athlete who competed in the early 20th century. He is most known for his success in the Olympic Games, where he earned a total of three medals.
Early Life and Athletics
Cartmell was born on February 16, 1878, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he excelled in track and field. During his college career, he set several world records in the sprints, including the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard dash.
1904 Olympic Games
Cartmell made his Olympic debut at the 1904 Summer Games in St. Louis. He competed in three events: the 60-meter dash, the 100-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash. In the 60-meter dash, he reached the semifinals. In the 100 and 200-meter dashes, he finished in second place, earning him two silver medals.
1908 Olympic Games
Four years later, Cartmell participated in the 1908 Summer Games in London. He competed in three events once more: the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x400-meter relay. In the 100-meter dash, he placed fourth. In the 200-meter dash, he won the bronze medal. In the 4x400-meter relay, he and his team took home the gold medal, making Cartmell an Olympic champion.
Later Life
After his Olympic career, Cartmell continued to be involved in track and field. He served as a coach and administrator. He died on January 1, 1933, at the age of 54.
