Early Life and Education
Nathaniel Wyatt was born into a family of renowned artists, including his father, Newell Convers Wyeth. However, from a young age, he displayed a fascination with mechanics, particularly springs and brakes found in his baby carriage. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Wyatt embarked on his engineering career.
Career at DuPont
Wyatt initially worked at Delco before joining DuPont, where his inventive brilliance truly emerged. He developed innovative solutions for Delco, including non-clogging valves and magnetic rollers for Typar production, before creating an automated dynamite cartridge machine.
Birth of the Plastic Bottle
In 1967, Wyatt initiated a conversation that sparked the revolution in beverage packaging. Despite skepticism that plastic could withstand carbonation pressure, Wyatt conducted a simple experiment. He removed the contents of a plastic detergent bottle, filled it with ginger ale, and refrigerated it overnight. To his astonishment, the bottle expanded and became wedged between shelves.
Innovative Engineering
Wyatt's experimentation led him to discover that orienting polymer molecules in a specific manner during bottle molding increased strength. He designed bottles etched with cross-hatching patterns, ensuring optimal molecular alignment. Additionally, he replaced polypropylene with the more flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET), creating a bottle that was transparent, lightweight, durable, and safe.
Environmental Sustainability
PET's environmental significance cannot be understated. While recycling was not a primary concern during Wyatt's initial patent in 1973, bottles began to be recycled in 1977. Today, PET is a cornerstone of recycling, accounting for nearly half of all polyester fiber production in the United States.
