Early Life and Education
Naum (Numa) Krupenik was born in Chișinău, Moldova, to a family of four children. His father, Yakov Krupenik, was a millwright at a bakery, while his mother, Brana Krupenik, was a tram conductor. Krupenik graduated from Chișinău State University and pursued his postgraduate studies under the guidance of Professors Iosif Itsikovich and Israel Gelfand. He defended his dissertation at Tbilisi State University in 1964.
Academic Career
Krupenik worked as an associate professor and head of the laboratory at the Department of Mathematical Analysis at Chișinău State University. He obtained his doctorate in 1987. In 1990, he joined Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel, as a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Upon his retirement in 2001, he settled in Toronto, Canada.
Research Contributions
Krupenik's research primarily focused on functional analysis. His notable contributions include investigations of one-dimensional and multi-dimensional singular integral operators, finite-dimensional representations in Banach algebras, and the Gohberg-Krupenik formula for inverting finite Toeplitz matrices.
Family and Legacy
Krupenik's sons, Mark and Ilya Krupenik, are both accomplished mathematicians. They earned their Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Israel in 1994. Krupenik's elder brother, Mikhail Krupenik, was a Moldovan economist and a senior researcher at the Moldovan Scientific Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Information and Technical and Economic Research.
