Biography of Nazanin Afshin-Jam

Early Life and Education

Nazanin Afshin-Jam is an Iranian-Canadian model, beauty pageant contestant, singer, writer, songwriter, speaker, and human rights activist. She was born in Iran and moved to Canada with her family in 1981. Afshin-Jam obtained her education at the University of British Columbia, where she earned a degree in Political Science and International Relations. She also studied at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and the Queen's University International Study Centre in Herstmonceux Castle, England. She later pursued a Master's degree in International Diplomacy from Norwich University.

Beauty Pageant Success

In 2003, Afshin-Jam won the title of 'Miss World Canada' and represented Canada at the 'Miss World' pageant in Sanya, China. Although she finished as the first runner-up, Afshin-Jam saw the competition as an opportunity to raise awareness for human rights issues.

Humanitarian Work

Afshin-Jam actively travels around the world, aiding those in need. She has supported tsunami victims in India and Sri Lanka, fundraised for earthquake victims in Bam, and promoted various charitable organizations. She became widely known for her involvement in the campaign to save the life of 18-year-old Iranian Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi, who was sentenced to death for defending herself and her niece against rapists. Through Afshin-Jam's campaign, over 350,000 signatures were collected, leading to international pressure and the eventual release of Fatehi in 2007.

Musical Career

Afshin-Jam also pursued a career in music. Her debut album, 'Someday,' was released in April 2007 under the label 'Bodog Music.' Her music encompasses a variety of genres, including pop and dance. Afshin-Jam sings in English, French, Persian, and Spanish.

Human Rights Advocacy

In February 2008, Afshin-Jam was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian organization 'Race Relations.' She continues to actively advocate for human rights globally.

Author

In May 2012, 'The Tale of Two Nazanins,' a book written by Afshin-Jam and Susan McClelland, was published. The book explores the parallel lives of Afshin-Jam and Fatehi, highlighting their shared commitment to human rights.
