Biography of Nedirbay Aytakov
Nedirbay Aytakov was born on the Mangyshlak Peninsula, in the steppe, according to his autobiography. The advancement of the Red Army in territories inhabited by Turkmen and the capture of Krasnovodsk in February 1920 led to the establishment of Soviet power in the region. During this period, Aytakov became the chairman of the aul (village) committee and later a member of the district revolutionary committee (revkom). In 1921, Aytakov was elected as a delegate to the district congress of Soviets and in August of the same year, he became a member and then the chairman of the district executive committee. The following year (1922), he joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks), but despite holding subsequent high-level government positions, Aytakov was not included in the Central Committee of the party.
The session of the Central Executive Committee of Turkestan elected Aytakov as the Deputy Chairman (1923-1924) and a member of the Presidium of Turkestan Central Executive Committee. On January 9, 1924, Aytakov was appointed as the chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which was then part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). During the transitional period, from November 1924 to May 1925, Aytakov served as the Chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of the Turkmen SSR, which acted as the interim government.
When the governing bodies of Turkmenistan, as part of the USSR, were formed, Aytakov was elected as the Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Turkmen SSR (May 1925 - 1937). Due to Turkmenistan's acquisition of the status of a union republic, Aytakov was also elected as one of the Chairmen of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on May 21, 1925. Aytakov held these positions for 12 years until he was arrested in Ashgabat on July 21/22, 1937. The Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced Aytakov to the highest measure of punishment on October 28, 1938, on charges of espionage and organizing a conspiracy to secede Turkmenistan from the Soviet Union.
