Early Life and Education
Nelie Kroes was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on July 19, 1941. She attended a Protestant high school in Rotterdam and later studied at the Protestant University for Higher Professional Education. In 1958, she began studying economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she served as a member of the university council. She earned her doctorate in economics in 1965 and became a lecturer in economics.
Political Career
In 1971, Kroes was elected to the lower house of the Dutch parliament, where she became a prominent spokesperson on education for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Six years later, she was appointed Minister of Transport, Public Works, and Water Management, also overseeing postal and telecommunications services.
Minister of Defense
In 1988, Kroes was offered the position of Defense Minister, which she declined.
European Commissioner
In 2004, Kroes was appointed as European Commissioner for Competition. In this role, she has tackled complex issues and controversies within the European industrial and business sectors.
Awards and Recognition
