Neil Faulkner: Archaeologist, Historian, and Political Activist

British archaeologist, historian, lecturer, television presenter, and author Neil Faulkner is a prominent figure in academia and left-wing politics.

Academic Journey

Faulkner earned degrees from King's College, Cambridge, and the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. Prior to becoming an archaeologist, he taught in schools. He has held research fellowships at the University of Bristol and edited the monthly magazine Military History Monthly. Faulkner has also led archaeological projects in Jordan (investigating the Great Arab Revolt) and Norfolk, England (the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project). In 2008, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA).

Archaeological Research

Initially specializing in Roman Britain, Faulkner has conducted extensive Anglo-Saxon excavations in Norfolk since 1996. In 2016, he completed a 10-year field project examining the military campaigns of T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") in southern Jordan during the Great Arab Revolt. He has authored numerous articles and academic texts, including 10 books:

The Decline and Fall of Roman Britain

Apocalypse: The Great Jewish Revolt against Rome
Rome: Empire of the Eagles
A Guide to the Ancient Olympics
A Marxist History of the World: From Neanderthals to Neoliberals
Digging Sedgeford: People's Archaeology
Television Presence

Faulkner has frequently appeared on television as both an academic expert and a political commentator. He has featured on Channel Four's Time Team, BBC2's Timewatch, and Sky Atlantic's The British. He has also produced short historical documentaries for Tariq Ali's "The World Today" on the Latin American channel Telesur.

Political Activism

Faulkner is a Marxist and a revolutionary socialist activist of the Trotskyist persuasion. A long-standing member of the Socialist Workers Party and later Counterfire, he has been involved since 2015 with the Left Book Club, which revives the tradition of the 1936-48 publishing house of the same name. He has joined the Labour Party to support party leader Jeremy Corbyn through the left-wing Momentum group.
