Nguyen Phuong Khanh: Miss Earth 2018
Vietnamese model and beauty pageant titleholder, Nguyen Phuong Khanh, made history at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila when she was crowned Miss Earth 2018.
Early Life and Education
Born in Ben Tre Province, Southern Vietnam, Phuong Khanh is currently pursuing a degree in Marketing Management. As a fluent English speaker, she first witnessed the Miss Earth pageant at the age of 16 and has since aspired to represent Vietnam on the global stage.
Miss Earth Pageant
Unlike other major beauty contests, Miss Earth requires contestants to advocate for environmental projects. Phuong Khanh impressed the judges with her proposal to protect the Mekong River and its surrounding communities.
Victories and Awards
On November 3, 2018, Phuong Khanh was crowned Miss Earth 2018. During the competition, she also won several sponsor awards, and on the final night, she received two gold medals (for Best National Costume and Evening Gown) and a silver medal (for Best Swimsuit).
Significance and Legacy
Not only did Phuong Khanh make history as the first Vietnamese woman to win Miss Earth, but she also became Vietnam's first major international beauty pageant winner. In the pageant, she answered the question, "What is the most pressing issue facing your generation?" by stating that she believes ignorance is the biggest problem.
