Niccolò Ammaniti

Born in Rome in 1966, Niccolò Ammaniti is an Italian writer. He studied biology but did not complete his degree.

Early Career and Recognition

Ammaniti's 1994 debut novel, "Branchie!" (Gills), was inspired by his unfinished thesis on neuroblastoma. In 1997, it was acquired by the prestigious publisher Einaudi. The novel follows a young Roman boy who travels to India to battle a tumor. A film adaptation was released in 1999.

Collaborations and Short Story Collections

In 1995, Ammaniti collaborated with his father on the essay "Nel nome del figlio" (In the Name of the Son). In 1996, his short story "Fango" (Mud) appeared in an anthology, followed by his short story collection of the same name, which included the acclaimed "Vivere e morire al Prenestino" (To Live and Die in Prenestino). The latter was adapted into the 1998 film "L'ultimo capodanno" (New Year's Eve), starring Monica Bellucci.

Novelistic Success

Ammaniti's 1999 novel "Ti prendo e ti porto via" (I Will Take You Away) centered on a fictional town in central Italy. In 2001, "Io non ho paura" (I Am Not Afraid) catapulted him to international fame. The novel was adapted into a film in 2003, winning the Flaiano Prize for best screenplay.

Controversial and Acclaimed

Ammaniti's 2006 novel "Come Dio comanda" (As God Commands) sparked controversy but also gained widespread popularity and won the 2007 Strega Prize. It was adapted into a film by Salvatore in 2008.

Collaborations and Recent Work

In 2004, Ammaniti wrote the screenplay for the film "Il siero della vanità" (The Serum of Vanity). His 2010 novel "Io e te" (You and Me) is being adapted into a film by Bernardo Bertolucci.
