Early Life and Education
Born in 1911 in Saint Petersburg, the English theoretical physicist spent his formative years in Germany. After attending school in Hanover, he pursued his higher education at the University of Göttingen.
Academic Career
In 1935, the physicist earned his doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Zurich. His subsequent employment included stints at Imperial College London (1936-1949), the University of Cambridge (1940-1946), and the University of Montreal (1940-1946). In 1946, he returned to Cambridge University and remained there until 1953.
Professorship and Research
From 1953 onwards, the physicist served as a Professor of Physics at the University of Edinburgh. He made significant contributions to mathematical physics, quantum field theory, subatomic particle physics, and quantum statistics.
Accomplishments
In 1938, the physicist independently predicted the existence of neutral mesons and formulated a symmetrical theory of nuclear forces. He also calculated the magnetic moment of the nucleon.
Recognition
The physicist's achievements were recognized by his induction into the Royal Society of London in 1956.
