Biography of Walter Andrew Shewhart

Early Life and Education
Walter Andrew Shewhart was born on March 18, 1891, in New Canton, Illinois. He was the son of Anton Shewhart and Esta Barney Shewhart. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois. In 1917, he defended his doctoral dissertation in physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at both universities and briefly served as the head of the physics department at the Wisconsin Normal School, LaCrosse.
Professional Career
Shewhart spent a significant portion of his professional career as an engineer at Western Electric (from 1918 to 1924) and Bell Telephone Laboratories. At Bell Telephone Laboratories, he held various positions, starting from the technical department in 1925 and eventually reaching a managerial position before his retirement in 1956. He also served as a consultant and lecturer on quality control and applied statistics at the University of London, Stevens Institute of Technology, the graduate school of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and even in India.
Contributions and Recognition
Shewhart's most significant contribution was the development of the control chart, a simple yet highly effective tool for ensuring economic control. His monumental work, "Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product," published in 1931, provided a comprehensive and thorough exposition of the fundamental principles of quality management. Shewhart's work revolutionized the field of quality control and positioned him as a true pioneer.
Throughout his career, Shewhart served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense, the United Nations, and the Indian government. He actively participated in the National Research Council and the International Statistical Institute. He was a honorary member of England's Royal Statistical Society and the Calcutta Statistical Association. He was also a member of the American Statistical Association, the Econometric Society, and the New York Academy of Science, among others.
Legacy and Death
Shewhart's extensive experience in science and technology formed the basis for his remarkable achievements. He passed away on March 11, 1967, at the age of 75. His contributions to quality control and statistics continue to be revered, and his work continues to shape the field to this day.
