Nico Kaufmann: Swiss Pianist and Composer
Early Life and EducationNico Kaufmann was born in Switzerland to a physician and amateur composer. He began studying piano and composition at the Zurich Conservatory under Emil Frey. From 1937 to 1939, he studied under Vladimir Horowitz, becoming his only European-based pupil. Kaufmann also received lessons from Dinu Lipatti.
Musical Career
In 1945, Kaufmann won the International Competition for Performers in Geneva, having previously won second prize in 1943. After World War II, he served as musical director and arranger for the renowned Cabaret Cornichon in Switzerland. He composed music for musical theater, ballets, piano pieces, and songs, including a significant vocal cycle based on the poetry of Hermann Hesse.
Legacy and Impact
Kaufmann was an active contributor to the Swiss gay newspaper "Der Kreis," where he led the music section. In his memory, the City of Zurich established the Nico Kaufmann Foundation, which awards scholarships to Swiss musicians under the age of 35.
