Role in American Revolution
In 1782, Staphorst and his brothers played a pivotal role in the Batavian Revolution in Amsterdam. They led negotiations with John Adams, the second president of the United States, to secure a loan of five million guilders for the American cause. This was a substantial sum at the time and played a significant role in the formation of the first foreign loan to the United States.
Political Career in the Batavian Republic
Following the successful Batavian Revolution, Staphorst became an advocate for a new constitution that would reduce the power of the stadtholder and establish a more democratic system of government. In 1789, he became a shareholder in the Holland Land Company, a syndicate that acquired vast tracts of land in the United States.
Relationship with France
In 1794, Staphorst and other leading Dutch patriots requested that French General Charles François Dumouriez "plant a tree of liberty" in the Netherlands and bring about changes in government. This request was ultimately denied.
Later Years and Legacy
Nicolaas van Staphorst served as a deputy in the first National Batavian Assembly in 1796 but soon after left politics due to illness. He passed away on June 14, 1801. Staphorst's contributions to the Batavian Revolution and his role in securing financial support for the United States remain significant legacies.
