Nico Hulkenberg - German Racing Driver

Nico Hulkenberg is a German racing driver who is currently a test driver for the Williams Formula 1 team and also competes in the GP2 Asia Series. He is the champion of the 2008 Euroseries Formula 3 season and the 2006-07 A1 Grand Prix season.

Early Career and Success in Karting and Formula BMW

Hulkenberg began his racing career in karting in 1997 at the age of 10. In 2002, he became the junior champion of Germany and the following year, he won the German championship. In 2005, he made his debut in the German Formula BMW series and had a highly successful first season, dominating the championship and winning the title. He finished first in the Formula BMW World Final, but was later disqualified for brake testing his rivals.

Move to Formula 3 and A1 Grand Prix

Hulkenberg moved to Formula 3 in 2006 and won one race in the German championship. He also joined the German team in the 2006-07 A1 Grand Prix season. His debut season in A1 Grand Prix was extremely successful, with nine wins making him the most successful driver in the history of the series. Germany won the championship with a comfortable margin of 128 points, 35 points ahead of New Zealand.

Success in Euroseries Formula 3

In 2007, Hulkenberg shifted his focus to the Euroseries Formula 3 and joined the ASM team, which had previously produced champions Lewis Hamilton and Paul di Resta. He achieved his first victory starting from 18th position at Norisring, followed by wins in rainy races at Zandvoort and Nurburgring. However, he faced some problems in Mani-Cure, receiving penalties and colliding with Philip Salaquarda. He also won the non-championship Formula 3 Masters race in Zolder, beating his teammate and championship leader Romain Grosjean after the Frenchman's collision at the start.

Recognition and Test Driver Role

Hulkenberg's talent did not go unnoticed, and his manager, Willy Weber, who had previously managed Michael Schumacher, praised him as an "incredible talent" and compared him to a young Schumacher. Hulkenberg conducted his first Formula 1 tests in 2007, and his impressive performance caught the attention of the Williams team. He was given the opportunity to test for the team in December 2007 and demonstrated his speed by setting a faster time than Kazuki Nakajima, the official Williams-Toyota driver for the following season, on his first day. Hulkenberg's flawless testing earned him a test driver position with Williams for the 2008 season, and his contract was extended for the 2009 season.

Continued Success and GP2 Asia Series

Hulkenberg continued to achieve success in his racing career, winning the Euroseries Formula 3 championship in 2008. He was almost unbeatable on Saturdays, earning 76 out of 85 possible points in the main races held on that day, with 7 victories. He made his debut in the GP2 Asia series with the ART Grand Prix team in the third round of the 2008-09 GP2 Asia season in Bahrain, where he secured pole position on his first attempt. He finished fourth in both races and moved up to seventh place in the championship standings. In his second race weekend in Qatar, he became the first driver to claim pole position in night conditions and went on to win the race, setting the fastest lap as well. He finished third in the sprint race, earning a total of 27 points in four races. He concluded his performance with a sixth-place finish in the championship.
