Biography of Nigel Benn

Nigel Benn is a former professional British boxer and a former world champion in the super middleweight division. He made his professional debut in January 1987 and fought most of his matches in the United Kingdom.

Early Career and Defeats

In May 1989, Benn was knocked out by Michael Watson in the sixth round of their fight. In November 1990, he suffered another defeat to the undefeated Chris Eubank. However, in October 1993, Benn had a rematch with Eubank, and this time the fight ended in a draw.

Battle with Gerald McClellan

In February 1995, Nigel Benn faced the formidable knockout artist Gerald McClellan in England. The fight was highly anticipated, and McClellan immediately launched an aggressive attack on Benn. He pinned him against the ropes and unleashed a barrage of punches, sending Benn down for a knockdown. The referee hesitated in continuing the fight, giving Benn a brief respite. McClellan, however, lacked the power to knock out his opponent instantly, but he dominated the fight, inflicting punishment on Benn.

In the eighth round, McClellan trapped Benn against the ropes again, resulting in another knockdown. Despite this, the champion showed resilience. Towards the end of the fight, it became evident that something was wrong with McClellan - he held his head strangely and blinked frequently. In the tenth round, he went down on his knees twice. After the second time, he failed to rise before the count of ten, and the fight was stopped.

The aftermath of the fight was tragic. McClellan suffered a brain injury and was permanently paralyzed. He also lost his vision and hearing. The bout was named "Fight of the Year" by Ring Magazine.

Later Career and Retirement

In March 1996, Benn tasted another defeat, losing to Tulani Malinga by a split decision. In July of the same year, he was knocked out by Steve Collins. In November, Benn suffered another knockout defeat to Collins. Following this loss, he decided to retire from boxing.
